Gail Presbey is a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Detroit Mercy, Department Chair of Philosophy, and Director of the Carney Latin American Solidarity Archive. She holds affiliate faculty roles in History and Women’s and Gender Studies. Her research focuses on African philosophy, nonviolence, and cross-cultural ethics, with expertise in Gandhi’s philosophy and African political movements. Presbey earned her Ph.D. and M.A. in Philosophy from Fordham University and an M.A. in World History from Wayne State University. She has conducted extensive research in Africa, India, and Latin America, including Fulbright grants in Kenya and India.
Her work bridges philosophy, history, and political theory, emphasizing global justice and peace. Notable publications include The Life and Thought of H. Odera Oruka (2023) and edited volumes on African philosophy and nonviolence. She has received awards such as the Detroit Mercy Faculty Achievement Award (2003) and Mission Leadership Award (2006), and actively serves on boards like the Peace History Society and Concerned Philosophers for Peace.
Presbey’s teaching spans African history, Latin American studies, and feminist philosophy. She has led student groups to Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Cuba. Her research often explores grassroots activism, oral traditions, and the intersection of philosophy with social movements.
