Dr. Gaetano Ortolano (born 1974) is an Associate Professor in Petrology and Petrography (GEO/07) at the University of Catania's Department of Biological, Geological and Environmental Sciences since 2012. He holds national qualifications as Full Professor (2025) and Associate Professor (2017, 2021) in Structural Geology and Petrology sectors. As Head of the Geoinformatics and Image Analysis Laboratory, he specializes in thermodynamic modeling, X-ray map analysis of metamorphic rocks, and GIS-based geological mapping.
- Research Focus: Quantitative structural analysis of mylonites, metamorphic phase diagram computation, and digital transition of geological data via geomatics.
- Leadership: National Scientific Qualifications (2017-2030), Academic Senator (2016-2021), and member of multiple research groups including Me.I.Ge.Pe.G. and European Society for DRT.
His scientific contributions include thermomechanical modeling of Mediterranean microplates and semi-automatic classification of petrographic materials. He has supervised 7 PhD theses and coordinated 15+ research projects, including collaborations with CNR IGAG and UNESCO Geopark initiatives. Recipient of four major awards, including the 2024 ESRI Italia Innovation Prize.
