Dr. Gaelan Murphy is an Associate Professor and Department Chair in the Department of Anthropology, Economics and Political Science at MacEwan University. He holds a PhD in Government from Georgetown University, with a concentration in political philosophy, alongside MA and BA degrees from Carleton University. His research focuses on 19th and 20th century continental political philosophy, particularly German Idealism and its intellectual legacy, and explores the relationship between reasonableness, hermeneutics, and education. He is currently working on a manuscript examining the disconnect between modern scientific materialism and the pursuit of happiness in moral contexts.
His educational background includes:
- PhD in Government (Georgetown University)
- MA in Political Science (Carleton University)
- BA in Political Science (Carleton University)
Research interests emphasize philosophy as a way of life through dialectical engagement with classical texts. He investigates practical reason in fragmented societies, hermeneutics as a tool for cultivating phronesis (practical wisdom), and the role of education in fostering reasoned judgment amid societal unreasonableness. His work integrates themes of technology, ethics, and political thought to address contemporary challenges.
Notable publications span topics like cosmopolitanism, civic republicanism, Hans-Georg Gadamer’s philosophy, and dialogues between Leo Strauss and Alexandre Kojève. His scholarship bridges historical political thought with modern ethical and pedagogical questions.
- Award: MacEwan University Distinguished Teaching Award (2011)
Dr. Murphy is available to supervise senior students’ independent study. His professional affiliations include the Association of Core Texts and Courses (ACTC).
