Dr. Sandstig defended her dissertation in 2010 at JMG, University of Gothenburg, with the thesis The Landscape of Insecurity. A survey of insecurity in urban space and an analysis of underlying causes, with a focus on the role of the media. Following her doctoral studies, she held postdoctoral positions at the Nordic School of Public Health (NHV) and the Department of Political Science at the University of Gothenburg under Professor Staffan I. Lindberg.
Her research focuses on the effects of media and communication in various contexts. She has conducted funded research for the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency, the Nordic Council of Ministers, and the Swedish Social Insurance Agency. Current projects include Risk and preparedness communication for a robust digital urban society (DURCOM) and The effects of age stereotypes on the ability of older people to handle crises. Her completed research encompasses fire risk communication, urban segregation, trust in social insurance, and security metrics.
Dr. Sandstig's publications demonstrate an evolving focus from urban safety and risk perception to pandemic communication and age-related crisis response. Her work consistently examines how media shapes public understanding of risk across different demographic groups and contexts, with increasing attention to digital environments and vulnerable populations.
She has received research funding from multiple government agencies including the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency, the Nordic Council of Ministers, and the Swedish Social Insurance Agency. Her collaborations extend to various authorities working on public safety, crime prevention, and urban development.
Dr. Sandstig teaches at both undergraduate and graduate levels, serving as course leader for Advanced Analysis in Media and Communication, Methods in Media and Communication Studies, and The Politics of Risk and Crisis Communication. Her teaching focuses on media analysis, research methods, and the intersection of politics, risk, and communication.
