Jesper Petersson is an Associate Professor in Sociology at the University of Gothenburg, Faculty of Social Sciences, Department of Sociology and Work Science. He holds a PhD in Science and Technology Studies and serves as a Senior Lecturer. During the academic year 2024, he is also a fellow in socio-material bureaucracy at SCORE - Stockholm Centre for Organizational Research.
His educational background includes:
- PhD in Science and Technology Studies with dissertation 'Geographies of eHealth: Studies of Healthcare at a Distance' (2014)
Petersson's research focuses on the intersection of technology, healthcare, and society, with particular expertise in eHealth, digitalization, and medical sociology. His work examines how digital technologies transform healthcare practices, professional roles, and patient relationships. He investigates the governance implications of digital health technologies and their impact on street-level bureaucracy in healthcare settings. His research combines Science and Technology Studies with Human Geography to analyze the spatial and relational dimensions of healthcare at a distance, with particular attention to how eHealth has shifted from reaching underserved populations to supporting elderly and chronic care patients in home environments.
His publication record demonstrates a consistent focus on digital healthcare transformations, with recent work examining patient-accessible electronic health records, urban water governance, and crisis communication in digital societies. His research shows an evolution from early work on telemedicine to contemporary studies of digital health ecosystems, with a strong emphasis on the sociotechnical dimensions of healthcare innovation and the political implications of digital health technologies.
Petersson has secured significant research funding, including:
- Forte financed project 'Beyond Covid? Using Patient Knowledge to Improve the Care and Management of Long Covid Sufferers' (2023-2026)
- Forte financed project 'Online medical records with patient access: How do they affect doctors' practice, profession and patient relations?' (2017-2022)
- FORMAS sponsored project 'Governance of transboundary risk: The Göta Älv water system' (2016-2019)
- Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB) funded study on ICT and social media in crisis management (SOMCRISC)
- Nordic Council of Ministers financed project 'The future of work: Opportunities and challenges for the Nordic models'
He supervises undergraduate, graduate, and master's theses while teaching courses in Sociology, including 'Risk, Power and Morale: Controversies in a Science Based Society,' and contributing to national PhD courses in Science and Technology Studies. Petersson is actively involved in research networks including the Urban Safety and Societal Security Research Centre (URBSEC), a cross-disciplinary collaboration between University of Gothenburg, Chalmers University of Technology, public authorities, industry, and business sector, and coordinates the Swedish West Coast Network for Science and Technology Studies (VäSTS).
