Gabriele Schabacher is Professor of Media Cultural Studies at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz's Institute for Film, Theatre, Media and Cultural Studies. She established the Media Cultural Studies program and designed the university's MA in Media Cultural Studies launched in 2020/21. Previously, she held positions at Bauhaus University Weimar (2014-2017) and coordinated the DFG Research Training Group at University of Siegen (2009-2014).
She earned her doctorate from University of Cologne in 2004 with a thesis on Roland Barthes's autobiography theory after studying philosophy, psychology, and German studies in Cologne and Bochum.
Research Focus:
Her work examines cultural infrastructures through media theory lenses, with emphasis on:
- Digital/analog urban surveillance systems
- AI pattern recognition in cultural contexts
- Historical mobility practices
- Media archaeology of repair techniques
- Autobiographical media forms
Leadership:
As deputy spokesperson for Collaborative Research Center 1482 'Human Differentiation', she leads subproject C04 'Urban Control Regimes: Train Stations as Infrastructures of Human Differentiation'. She supervises seven doctoral researchers including Franziska Reichenbecher and Mona Wischhoff.
