Gabriel Barkay is a lecturer in archaeology at Bar-Ilan University and co-founder of the Temple Mount Sifting Project, dedicated to examining archaeological materials from Jerusalem's most sacred site.
Dr. Barkay holds a Ph.D. in archaeology from Tel Aviv University. His academic career has focused on the archaeological investigation of biblical Jerusalem, particularly through innovative methodologies like the sifting project.
His research specializes in biblical archaeology with emphasis on Jerusalem's ancient history. Barkay's most significant discovery occurred at Ketef Hinnom where his team uncovered 7th century BCE silver scrolls containing the Priestly Blessing from the Torah, representing some of the oldest biblical texts ever found. His ongoing Temple Mount Sifting Project has recovered thousands of artifacts spanning multiple historical periods, providing unprecedented insights into Jerusalem's religious and cultural development.
His scholarly contributions have been recognized with the Jerusalem Prize in 1996, awarded for his exceptional work in advancing our understanding of ancient Jerusalem.
As co-director of the Temple Mount Sifting Project, Barkay leads an extensive operation that systematically examines soil removed from the Temple Mount, employing both professional archaeologists and volunteers to recover and document artifacts from various historical periods, including the First Temple period, Second Temple period, Byzantine era, and later periods.
