Gabriel B. Costa is an Associate Professor in the Mathematics and Computer Science Department at Seton Hall University, where he has been on faculty since 1980 after being ordained as a priest for the Archdiocese of Newark. He is currently on extended Academic Leave from Seton Hall University but maintains strong connections with the United States Military Academy (West Point), where he has served multiple tours including 1992-1993, 1995-1996, and 1999-2001.
His educational background includes:
- B.S. Mathematics from Stevens Institute of Technology
- M.S. Mathematics from Stevens Institute of Technology
- M.A. Systematic Theology from Immaculate Conception Seminary
- Ph.D. Mathematics from Stevens Institute of Technology
Dr. Costa's research spans two primary domains: mathematics and sabermetrics (baseball statistics). In mathematics, he has focused extensively on differential equations, publishing numerous papers on polynomial solutions to various classes of ordinary and partial differential equations. In sabermetrics, he pioneered the first university-credited course on the subject at Seton Hall University in 1988 and has authored multiple books and articles analyzing baseball statistics, player performance, and historical trends. His unique interdisciplinary approach combines mathematical rigor with sports analytics, making significant contributions to both fields.
His publications reveal a consistent pattern of blending mathematical theory with practical applications, particularly in baseball analytics. Over his career, he has evolved from theoretical mathematics to increasingly focusing on sabermetrics, culminating in several comprehensive books that systematize the field for academic study. His mathematical work often features polynomial solutions to differential equations, while his sabermetrics research provides sophisticated analytical frameworks for understanding baseball performance metrics.
Among his notable recognitions:
- Outstanding Civilian Service Medal from United States Military Academy
- Commander's Award For Public Service Medal from USMA
- Commander's Award For Civilian Service Medal from USMA
- Certificate In Recognition of Twenty Years service at USMA
- Hoboken Public Schools Distinguished Graduate Award
- Inducted into PI MU EPSILON, SIGMA PI SIGMA, and PHI KAPPA PHI honor societies at USMA
Dr. Costa has mentored numerous students and collaborators, particularly in the development of sabermetrics as an academic discipline. His work with John T. Saccoman, Michael R. Huber, and Richard Bronson has been particularly influential. He has also been active in public outreach, maintaining a "By The Numbers" blog for WFAN 660 AM radio from 2010-2015 and appearing in various television interviews about baseball history and statistics.
His academic service includes significant contributions to both Seton Hall University and the United States Military Academy, where he has spent approximately twenty years across multiple appointments. He continues to be active in his fields, with recent publications in 2023 and an invitation to give a lecture at Dartmouth College in February 2025.
