Frits van Oostrom is an emeritus professor of Dutch literature at Utrecht University, specializing in medieval Dutch literature. He has held prominent administrative roles including President of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (2005–2008), Dean of Leiden University's Faculty of Arts (1998–2000), and Chair of the Dutch Canon Development Committee (2005–2007). His research focuses on medieval Dutch literature from its origins to the Romantic period, with notable works like Maerlants wereld (AKO Literature Prize, 1996) and De Reynaert (2023).
Van Oostrom's academic career spans over four decades, marked by prestigious awards such as the Spinoza Prize (1995) and the Golden Medal of the Royal Flemish Academy (2017). He has authored influential books on medieval Dutch literary history, cultural identity, and knightly culture.
