Prof. Dr. Wiep van Bunge is a Full Professor of the History of Philosophy at Erasmus University Rotterdam's Erasmus School of Philosophy. He holds the endowed chair of the Dutch Spinoza Society and served as Dean from 2004-2012. His expertise spans 17th-century Dutch philosophy, Spinoza studies, and early Enlightenment thought.
Education: BA & MA (Utrecht University), PhD (Erasmus University Rotterdam, 1990) on Johannes Bredenburg. Notable works include From Stevin to Spinoza (2001), Spinoza Past and Present (2012), and From Bayle to the Batavian Revolution (2019). He co-edited key volumes like Dictionary of Seventeenth and Eighteenth-Century Dutch Philosophers (2003) and contributed to Pierre Bayle’s Correspondance (1999-2017).
Research focuses on Dutch Republic intellectual history, Spinoza's legacy, and Enlightenment skepticism. He created the MOOC The Politics of Skepticism (2017) with Tim de Mey. Active in public engagement through documentaries like Spinoza. Een vrije denker (2015) and academic lectures at institutions such as Delft University of Technology.
Awarded memberships in Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) and Royal Holland Society of Sciences and Humanities (KHMW). Engaged in over 190 academic activities including lectures on Spinoza, early modern ethnography, and Dutch philosophical history.
