Han van Ruler is a Full Professor of Intellectual History and Vice-Dean at the Erasmus School of Philosophy, Erasmus University Rotterdam. He is the General Editor of Brill’s Studies in Intellectual History since 2011 and has held leadership roles in institutions like the Dutch Research School of Philosophy (OZSW) and the Dutch National Philosophy Olympiad (NFO).
His research focuses on Early Modern Western Philosophy, Descartes and Cartesianism, Spinoza, Leibniz, Renaissance Moral Philosophy, and the History of Metaphysics. He has contributed to interdisciplinary studies through cultural anthropology, semiotics, and linguistic analysis, particularly in the context of Erasmus and Thomas More’s intellectual legacies.
Recent publications include analyses of Spinoza’s Amor intellectualis Dei (2024), explorations of agency and freedom (2024), and works on Descartes’ naturalization of consciousness (2017). These span keywords like Metaphysics, Ethics, Theology, and History of Ideas, with subfields covering Felicity Theories, Combinatorics, and Utopian Studies.
Scientific awards include the NWO 'Open Competition' Research Grant for the Decoding Descartes project (2019). His editorial and leadership roles, such as President of the Dutch National ‘Philosophy Month’ Foundation (2014-2019), underscore his influence in academic and public philosophy spheres.
