Dr. Jo van Cauter is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at Utrecht University, affiliated with the Faculty of Humanities. His research focuses on early modern philosophy, particularly the intersection of religion and politics in thinkers like Machiavelli, Hobbes, Spinoza, and Locke. He specializes in the 'theological-political problem,' examining how modern philosophers reconciled religious belief with emerging scientific and rational frameworks.
