Fredrik Ekengren is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Archaeology and Ancient History at Lund University, part of The Joint Faculties of Humanities and Theology. He is actively engaged in teaching archaeological theory and method, European and Scandinavian Stone Age, Bronze Age, Iron Age, and Viking Age Scandinavia courses. His office is located in room LUX:A123 at Helgonavägen 3, Lund.
Dr. Ekengren's research interests focus on the archaeology of death and burial, ritual theory, materiality, Iron Age and Early Medieval/Viking Age Europe and Scandinavia, the Swedish colony New Sweden in 17th century North America, and the use of digital methods in archaeological research and teaching. His work demonstrates an interdisciplinary approach that bridges traditional archaeological methods with contemporary digital technologies.
His recent publications show a strong emphasis on digital archaeological infrastructure, particularly through projects like Dynamic Collections, which develops 3D web platforms for artifact engagement and data reuse. His research spans from ancient ritual practices to early modern colonial encounters, with a consistent focus on material culture transformations across different historical periods.
Ekengren is actively involved in multiple research projects including SCIARG (Scandinavian Iron Age Research Group), Dynamic Collections, and Entrusted to the flames – The ritual technologies of Viking Age cremations. He has supervised PhD students and participated extensively in academic activities including organizing conferences and workshops.
His teaching responsibilities include ARKA31 (Archaeology: Level 1/Foundation Course), and he is involved in developing digital methods for archaeological education. He is also affiliated with The Laboratory for Digital Archaeology (DARK Lab) which reflects his commitment to integrating technology with traditional archaeological practices.
