Dr Russell Martin O Riagain is a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow at the School of History, University of St Andrews. His research focuses on early medieval Scandinavian and Insular histories, with expertise in archaeology, burial practices, and narrative analysis.
Key interests include the Viking Age, migration patterns in the 9th-11th centuries, and the emergence of polities like Dál Riata. He also explores cremation practices in Atlantic northern Britain and the intersection of emotion with colonial landscapes. His work bridges historical and archaeological methodologies.
Recent publications address Insular Viking Age dynamics, Scandinavian diaspora mobility, and early medieval burial rituals. He has presented on Late Roman hegemony impacts and Late Antique religious practices in Ireland and Britain.
