Frederick M. Walter is a Professor of Astronomy at Stony Brook University's Department of Physics and Astronomy. He joined SBU in 1989 and previously held postdoctoral and research roles at the University of Colorado's JILA, LASP, and CASA. His research focuses on stellar birth/death, magnetic activity (stellar 'weather'), and novae. He uses telescopes globally and in space, including SMARTS facilities, and studies phenomena like thermonuclear runaways on white dwarfs and Carrington-event risks.

Research Interests: Observational astronomy emphasizing novae, stellar magnetic fields, and interstellar medium interactions. His work combines multiwavelength data to probe stellar atmospheres and circumstellar environments.
Publications Trends: Recent work emphasizes recurrent nova mechanisms, shock physics in novae, and applications of the Condor Array Telescope. Key themes include nova super-remnants, intergalactic filament mapping, and accretion disk dynamics in young stars.
