Frederick C Schwerer

Frederick C Schwerer is an Associate Professor of English at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, serving within the Humanities Division. He coordinates the Creative Writing major and teaches courses such as Poetry Workshop, Playwriting, and Digital Poetry. His expertise spans poetry writing, poetics, and ethnography, with a focus on folklore integration.

• Education: PhD in English/Creative Writing (Ohio University), MFA in Poetry (University of Iowa), BA in Environmental Sociology (Allegheny College)

Research & Publications: Authored three poetry collections including Cruel Folklore (2017) and The Saint of Withdrawal (2006). His work explores contemporary poetry, cultural narratives, and ethnographic themes. Articles appear in Prairie Schooner, Gesture, and others.

Community Engagement: Volunteers in Johnstown’s food systems, housing, and public art initiatives. Developed writing workshops for at-risk youth and recovering adults. Coordinated service-learning programs in Tanzania, Ecuador, and Kentucky.
