Prof. Dr. Fred S. Wouters is a Professor at the University of Göttingen, leading the Laboratory for Molecular and Cellular Systems within the Institute for Neuropathology. His academic journey includes a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Utrecht University (1997), postdoctoral fellowships at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund (London) and the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (Heidelberg), and habilitation in Physiology (2006). He became a Professor in 2007, focusing on cellular molecular machines and advanced microscopy techniques.
Research interests span tyrosine kinase receptor signaling, non-apoptotic cell death mechanisms, and synapse formation. His work integrates cutting-edge imaging technologies like FLIM and FRET microscopy, with recent advancements in 3D light-sheet microscopy for clinical pathology. Collaborations include the CLINOMIC platform to develop optical clearing methods for tissue diagnostics.
Key projects include BMBF-funded 3DPatho (light-sheet microscopy for pathology) and NanoPatho (ultrastructural imaging in MS). He also leads the Eurostars-funded DETECtOR project, advancing near-infrared microscopy. His lab is equipped with state-of-the-art microscopes, including STED and tomographic electron microscopy.
Grants and funding: BMBF (3DPatho, NanoPatho), Eurostars (DETECtOR). Collaborations: Dr. Gertrude Bunt (electron microscopy), University Medical Center Göttingen. Contact: fred.wouters@gwdg.de.
