Fred Irby III is a Professor of Music and Coordinator of Instrumental Music at Howard University's Department of Music (College of Fine Arts), where he directs the internationally renowned Howard University Jazz Ensemble (HUJE). He has been a faculty member since 1974, leading the HUJE on tours across five continents and producing 44 recordings since 1976. His roles include trumpet instructor, Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra member, and music director for prominent jazz ensembles.
Education: B.A. from Grambling State University and M.M. from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.
Research interests focus on jazz education, instrumental music pedagogy, and cultural preservation through performance. The HUJE's legacy includes Kennedy Center Honors Gala appearances (1992, 1996, 2005) and collaborations with icons like Lionel Hampton and Tony Bennett.
Notable achievements include establishing the Benny Golson Jazz Master Award and the Abraham S. Venable Scholarship. Awards highlight his contributions to jazz education and service, including recognition from NAfME, downbeat magazine, and the International Trumpet Guild.
