Prof. Dr. habil. Frank Peter Stephan is a Professor of Architectural Theory and History of Architectural Theory at the Fachhochschule Potsdam (FH Potsdam). He specializes in early modern architecture, urban planning, and the iconographic coding of public spaces. His research focuses on the interplay between architecture and political power, religious symbolism, and the dramaturgy of urban spaces.
Education: Born in 1963, he studied Ancient History, Church History, and Christian Archaeology at the Universities of Freiburg and Heidelberg. He earned his doctorate in Art History and Classical Archaeology from the University of Freiburg (1996) with a thesis on Tiepolo’s frescoes in Würzburg Residence. He completed his habilitation in 2005 and became a Privatdozent at Freiburg University before assuming his current position in 2013.
Research & Teaching: His work examines architectural theory as a bridge between historical preservation and modern design. Key areas include the staging of urban spaces, baroque iconography, and the rhetoric of architectural design. He has held visiting professorships at institutions like Göteborg University and the University of Essex.
Publications: Stephan has authored monographs on topics like baroque urban architecture and architectural history. Notable works include Das Obere Belvedere in Wien (2009) and Staged Architecture. The Baroque Façades of the Berlin Palace (2021). His research frequently explores the symbolic layers of architecture, such as political power, religious narratives, and urban identity.
Awards: He received the Wetzsteinpreis (2006) and the Preis der Scheffel-Gesellschaft (1982). His contributions span art historical analysis, architectural conservation, and interdisciplinary studies linking art, theology, and urban planning.
