Prof. Dr. Stephan Westphalen is a Professor of Byzantine Archaeology and Art History at the University of Heidelberg's Faculty of Philosophy. His work focuses on early Christian and Byzantine architecture, wall paintings, and cultural exchange in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Research Interests: Westphalen specializes in Byzantine church architecture (5th–8th centuries), temple-to-church transitions, and medieval wall paintings in Syria and Turkey. His projects bridge Late Antiquity and Islamic periods, analyzing urban planning and artistic syncretism.
