Charlie Barber is the Donald Drew Egbert Professor of Art and Archaeology at Princeton University's Department of Art and Archaeology. His research focuses on Byzantine and Post-Byzantine art, particularly the icon's historical and theoretical dimensions, Byzantine aesthetics, and manuscript studies. He holds affiliations with Hellenic Studies and the Humanities Council.
Education: PhD from the Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London (1989).
Research interests include El Greco studies, Byzantine garden culture, and 16th-century fresco workshops. Current projects involve a monograph on El Greco and a multivolume translation series for Byzantine art sources. Recent publications explore Cretan Renaissance painters, Theodore Metochites' architectural writings, and cross-cultural iconographic themes.
Teaching encompasses undergraduate courses on Early Christian/Byzantine art and graduate seminars addressing conceptual issues in medieval art history.
He has organized interdisciplinary workshops on Byzantine intellectual history, resulting in edited volumes like Michael Psellos on Literature and Art (2017). His work bridges art history with philosophical and theological inquiry.
