Frank Moriarty is an Associate Professor at the School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI), and serves as the Institutional Lead for Open Research at RCSI. He holds a Visiting Research Fellow position at The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (TILDA), focusing on medications research, and previously served as a Senior Research Fellow at the HRB Centre for Primary Care Research. His expertise spans pharmacoepidemiology, health economics, and medicines optimization in older adults, with a focus on deprescribing and polypharmacy.
Education: Moriarty earned his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from Trinity College Dublin and his Master of Pharmacy from RCSI. He completed his PhD at RCSI through the SPHeRE programme, investigating the economic and patient impacts of inappropriate prescribing.
Research interests include health services research, prescribing quality, and pharmaceutical policy. He leads projects on medication safety, deprescribing guidelines, and the implementation of pharmacist-led interventions in primary care. His work aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-Being).
Grants and Funding: Moriarty has secured funding from bodies like the Health Research Board (HRB), EU Horizon Europe, and the Wellcome Trust for projects addressing polypharmacy, deprescribing, and controlled drug prescribing policies.
Professional Activities: He serves on the Research Data Governance Board of the CSO's Health Research Data Centre, the steering committee of the Network of European Researchers in Deprescribing (NERD), and editorial boards for Research in Social and Administrative Pharmacy and Journal of Multimorbidity and Comorbidity. He is also an affiliate with medRxiv and a member of the Irish College of General Practitioners Research Ethics Committee.
Teaching: As Year 5 Lead on the MPharm programme at RCSI, Moriarty oversees modules on patient care and society, focusing on multimorbidity, deprescribing, and professional development. He also delivers postgraduate education on critical appraisal, research methods, and open research practices.
