Francisco Veiga is Professor of Economics at the School of Economics and Management at the University of Minho (UMinho). He holds an undergraduate degree in Economic and Political International Relations from UMinho and a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of South Carolina.
His research focuses on Macroeconomics, International Monetary Economics, Political Economy, and Economic Growth. His scholarly work frequently examines the intersection of politics and economics, particularly political business cycles, electoral incentives, and budget cycles in municipal governments. His methodology typically combines theoretical modeling with rigorous empirical analysis, often using Portuguese municipal data as a case study but with broader implications for political economy.
Veiga's publication record shows consistent output in top economics journals, with recent work emphasizing fiscal policy manipulation, electoral incentives, and the relationship between political institutions and economic outcomes. His research demonstrates particular expertise in analyzing how political considerations influence municipal financial decisions and electoral outcomes.

His current research includes studies on municipal finance impacts and Portuguese economic growth.
