Miguel Portela is a Full Professor of Economics at the School of Economics and Management of the University of Minho. He serves as Director of the Centre for Research in Economics and Management (NIPE) and as Co-Editor of the Portuguese Economic Journal. He collaborates with Banco de Portugal and is affiliated with NIPE/UMinho and IZA (Bonn).
His research focuses on labour economics, firm performance, and applied econometrics, particularly analyzing the Portuguese economy. He has published in journals like Econometrica, Labour Economics, and Regional Studies, and contributed to books and policy reports on minimum wage, education, and employment in Portugal.
Portela has led and participated in research projects funded by public and private entities, including the FCT-funded project "It's All About Productivity: Contributions to the Understanding of the Sluggish Performance of the Portuguese Economy". He also provides consulting services to public institutions and private organizations.
