Francesca Parente is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at Christopher Newport University (CNU) and Director of the Reiff Center for Human Rights and Conflict Resolution. She holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from UCLA (2019) and a B.A. in Political Philosophy, Policy, and Law from the University of Virginia (2013 as an Echols Scholar). Her research focuses on human rights institutions, compliance with international law, and post-violence transitions, particularly in Latin America. She previously held postdoctoral fellowships at Princeton University’s Niehaus Center and the Perry World House at the University of Pennsylvania.
Research Interests: Compliance with human rights courts, institutional design of international organizations, impact of international law on state behavior, observational data analysis, and post-dictatorship accountability. Her dissertation on the Inter-American Court of Human Rights won the APSA Human Rights Section Best Dissertation Award (2020).
Publications & Honors: Her work appears in journals like Review of International Organizations, Journal of Politics, and International Studies Quarterly. Recent accolades include the 2025 ASIL Honorable Mention for Best Article on International Law and the ISA Human Rights Section Best Paper Award (2025).
Teaching & Engagement: Teaches courses on international relations, human rights, and international law/organizations. Directs the Reiff Center, which focuses on human rights education and conflict resolution. Methodological expertise includes causal inference and duration modeling.
