Rebecca Cordell is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Pittsburgh, affiliated with the Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences. She previously served as an Assistant Professor at the University of Texas at Dallas and conducted postdoctoral research at Arizona State University. She holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of Essex (2017).
Her research focuses on international relations, human rights, and state repression. Key areas include transnational repression dynamics, measuring human rights through machine learning and text analysis, and public opinion on human rights. She leads the Sub-national Analysis of Repression Project (SNARP) and explores how epidemics influence social unrest. Recent work examines judiciary institutions in American Indian nations and UN peacekeeping authorization.
Her research is published in top journals like International Interactions, Journal of Conflict Resolution, and Journal of Peace Research. Awards include the ISA Human Rights Section Best Paper Award (2024) and the Steven C. Poe Best Graduate Student Paper Award (2018).
Cordell teaches courses on human rights law, civil conflict, and political methodology. She combines quantitative methods with policy analysis to address global governance challenges, emphasizing sub-national variation in repression and the ethical dilemmas of security policies.
