Katherine Beall is a Lecturer in the Department of Political Science at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and a former Postdoctoral Fellow at Princeton University's Niehaus Center for Globalization and Governance. She holds a PhD from the University of California, Berkeley, a Master's in Human Rights Studies from Columbia University, and a BA from the University of Kansas.
Her research focuses on international law and organizations, global order, and evolving norms of sovereignty and intervention. She investigates how the Global South shapes and challenges human rights and development norms, with regional expertise in Latin America and Africa. Her work explores overlaps between political projects in these regions and their implications for international governance.
Selected publications include International Studies Quarterly, The Review of International Organizations, and Third World Quarterly. A book on regional institutions and self-determination is forthcoming with Cambridge University Press. She received two APSA dissertation awards in 2023 for her work on regional organizations and human rights.
