Francesca De Cesare is a Full Professor of Spanish Language and Translation (L-LIN/07) at Università di Napoli "L'Orientale," where she has been teaching since 2014 (previously as Associate Professor until 2021). She holds a PhD in Iberistics from Università di Bologna (1998) and has previously taught at Università degli studi di Napoli "Federico II" as Researcher (1999-2005) and Associate Professor. Her academic career spans teaching Spanish language, linguistics, and translation across various institutions including Universidad de León, where she has served as Professor-Tutor since 2014.
Her research centers on how language constructs, reflects, and distorts power dynamics, identity, and citizenship in democratic societies, with three primary research lines: political communication, media representation, and legislative language, all examined through gender lenses. She has conducted extensive analyses of digital political communication (including YouTube channels of government ministries), Twitter discourse of political figures, representation of women in far-right media, pandemic communication in Spanish press, and legislative language in gender-related policies.
De Cesare's recent publications reveal consistent focus on gender representation in political discourse, with particular attention to how language shapes perceptions of women in politics and society. Her work demonstrates how discourse analysis can uncover ideological positioning in seemingly neutral communication, especially regarding feminist policies and gender equality initiatives. She examines both institutional communication channels and oppositional discourse to map the linguistic landscape of gender politics in contemporary Spain.
As scientific director of multiple research projects including "Identidad y representaciones nacionales en la prensa española" and "L'immagine dell'Italia nella Spagna contemporanea," she leads investigations into national identity construction through media. She currently participates in significant international projects: the European Erasmus+ initiative "Freedom of movement at play" (2022-2025) and the PRIN 2022 project "Language, gender and citizenship in democratic societies" (DiLeGIS).
She actively supervises doctoral students and research fellows, with current advisees including Punzi Zarino Wanda at Università degli Studi di Napoli Partenope and María Lucía Carrillo Expósito. Her leadership extends to organizing international conferences such as "Words, images and ideology of Populism 3.0" (2018) and serving on scientific committees for numerous international conferences focused on gender, translation, and political discourse.
De Cesare contributes to academic communities through editorial board membership for journals including "AGON," "IURA AND LEGAL SYSTEMS," "ANNALI DELL'ISTITUTO UNIVERSITARIO ORIENTALE DI NAPOLI. SEZIONE ROMANZA," and "REVISTA INTERNACIONAL DE CULTURAS Y LITERATURAS." Her interdisciplinary approach bridges linguistics, political science, gender studies, and media analysis, reflecting her commitment to understanding language as a social and political practice.
