Professor Rebecca Suter is a scholar of modern Japanese literature and comparative literature at the University of Sydney. She holds a BA and PhD from the Università degli Studi di Napoli 'l'Orientale'. Her academic career includes teaching at Harvard University and Brown University before joining Sydney in 2008. Her research focuses on cross-cultural negotiations, Japanese popular culture, and the intersection of literature with history and translation studies.

Her research investigates Japan’s cultural interactions with Euro-American societies, challenging conventional views of globalization. Current projects explore Australia’s multilingual archives and Japanese-Australian beverage consumption cultures.
Her articles span comparative literature, manga studies, and food culture. Notable awards include Fellow of the Royal Society of New South Wales (2021) and the Inoue Yasushi Award (2013).
Teaching focuses on Japanese literature, Asian popular culture, and translation studies. She advises students on topics like cross-cultural representations and postcolonial studies.
Co-leads the ARC Discovery Project 'Opening Australia’s Multilingual Archive' and collaborates with the Charles Perkins Centre on beverage consumption studies. Media engagements include interviews on Murakami Haruki and Japanese cultural phenomena for ABC and SBS.
