Maria Carreras Goicoechea

Maria Carreras Goicoechea is a Researcher in Spanish Language, Translation and Linguistics at the Department of Humanities, University of Catania. She previously held academic positions at the University of Bologna, where she was a Senior Researcher from 2007 and taught at the School of Languages, Literatures and Translation (SSLiMIT/SLLTI). She has coordinated the Spanish Department at the Ragusa campus and teaches courses such as Spanish Language and Translation and History of the Spanish Language at the master's level.

Research Interests:

• Contrastive and applied linguistics
• Lexicography (Italian-Catalan bilingual dictionaries)
• History and sociolinguistics of the Spanish language
• Gender and politically correct language use
• Audiovisual and literary translation

Her research has explored the translation of cultural references in films by Totò, the evolution of Spanish grammar, and the representation of gender in political discourse. She has led multiple research projects on inclusive language and online discourse, and has published on topics such as neology, linguistic borrowing, and translation pedagogy.

Advising and Grants: She has supervised numerous bachelor’s and master’s theses on topics ranging from translation of song lyrics to dialectal variation and gendered language. She has led or participated in multiple research projects funded by the University of Catania, including VoxDo (on women’s voices), and projects on politically correct language, gender representation in Spanish political discourse, and linguistic contamination in times of crisis. She has also collaborated on national research initiatives at the University of Bologna and University of Milan.

Leadership and Service: She has organized academic events, served on editorial boards (including Rivista Italiana di Studi Catalani and Zibaldone), coordinated Erasmus exchanges with Spanish universities, and acted as a peer reviewer for journals and funding agencies such as Agaur.
