Frances Orton is an Associate Professor at Heriot-Watt University's School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society, and a member of the Institute for Life and Earth Sciences. She leads the freshwater ecotoxicology research group, focusing on protecting freshwater biota, particularly amphibians, from environmental threats. Her work emphasizes chemical mixtures, environmental stressors like heatwaves, and invasive species. She is an expert in non-destructive biomonitoring techniques and has advised regulatory bodies such as the European Commission and UK Environment Agency.
Education: B.Sc. Environmental Biology (2000), MRes Aquatic Ecotoxicology (2003), Doctorate on amphibians and pollutants (2008). Postdoctoral roles included EU-funded projects on pollutant mixtures (2009-2015).
Research interests span amphibian conservation, ecotoxicology, and environmental policy. She contributes to journals like Ecotoxicology and Environmental Safety and editorial roles in Archives of Environmental Toxicology. Active in professional networks such as SETAC and the Marine Alliance for Science and Technology.
Recent work includes studies on tropical frog health in Trinidad, pond snail pollution impacts, and reproductive biomarkers in amphibians. She advocates for realistic exposure scenarios in ecological research and collaborates internationally on wetland conservation.
