Frances O'Morchoe

Frances O'Morchoe is a Visiting Assistant Professor in International History at New York University's Program in International Relations. Her research focuses on sovereignty, state formation, and colonial legacies in Burma/Myanmar and China. She holds a DPhil from Oxford and taught at institutions including Yale University, Oxford, Brac University (Bangladesh), and Parami University in Yangon. She currently works on a book about Burma-China borderlands sovereignty and has affiliations with Southeast Asian Studies UK and the Association of Asian Studies.

Her research interests span colonialism's impact on natural resources, ethnic narratives in border regions, and the historiography of fragmented sovereignty. Recent work examines educational responses to conflict and colonial botanical science's role in empire-building. She has held postdoctoral positions at Yale and previously worked with human rights organizations in Myanmar and Thailand.

Teaching focuses include global history, modern Asian imperialism, and Southeast Asian ethnicity studies. Her current affiliations include the European Association for Southeast Asian Studies.
