Penelope Edwards is a Professor of Southeast Asian Studies and Walter and Elise Haas Professor of Asian Studies at the University of California, Berkeley. She serves as Director of the Institute of East Asian Studies. Her research focuses on cultural history of Burma/Myanmar, Cambodia, and the Chinese diaspora, with emphasis on Theravada Buddhist practices, colonialism's impact, and global religious networks.
Her research interests include literary and material culture analysis, the intersection of Buddhism with nationalism, and performance traditions across Southeast Asia. She has published extensively on topics ranging from Cambodian national identity formation under French colonialism to contemporary Buddhist networks.
In 2025, she will teach a graduate seminar on Buddhism and modernity in Southeast Asia and Sri Lanka. Edwards has edited special journal issues on Cambodian Buddhism and translated key historical texts related to Khmer religious institutions.
