Frances Milat is an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine, School of Clinical Sciences at Monash University, and a key researcher at the Hudson Institute of Medical Research, where she leads the Metabolic Bone Research Group. She is also Head of Metabolic Bone Services at Monash Health, integrating clinical practice with research. Her work is focused on improving bone health in complex chronic conditions, with strong affiliations across academic, clinical, and research institutions in Australia.
Research Interests: Dr. Milat’s research centers on metabolic bone disorders, particularly osteoporosis and bone disease in chronic illnesses such as transfusion-dependent haemoglobinopathies, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, renal disease, transplantation, type 1 diabetes, and breast cancer. She also investigates women’s health issues, including premature ovarian insufficiency. Her work bridges clinical endocrinology and translational research to improve patient outcomes.
Recent Research Trends: Her recent publications (2024) reflect a strong focus on fracture risk assessment, bone strength modeling, and innovative diagnostic tools, including AI-based detection of atypical femur fractures. She contributes to national clinical guidelines and leads multidisciplinary research projects addressing osteoporosis care models and bone health optimization in vulnerable populations.
- Scientific Awards:
- ANZBMS Kaye Ibbertson Award for Bone and Mineral Medicine (2019)
- Endocrine Society of Australia Ken Wynne Post-Doctoral Research Award (2018)
- Endocrine Society of Australia Mid-Career Award (2017)
- Endocrine Society of Australia Outstanding Clinical Practitioner Award (2023)
- One Monash Health Innovation and Leadership Award (2016)
Grants and Supervision: Dr. Milat has served as Chief or Primary Chief Investigator on multiple NHMRC-funded and institutionally supported projects, including studies on osteoporosis in haemoglobinopathies, bone health in cerebral palsy, and post-COVID osteoporosis care models. She supervises research students and is accepting PhD candidates through Monash University’s SupervisorConnect program, contributing actively to medical education and postgraduate training.
Labs and Teams: She leads the Metabolic Bone Research Group at the Hudson Institute and collaborates closely with Monash Health and national research networks. Her team focuses on clinical and translational research in bone and mineral metabolism, utilizing advanced imaging and biomarker analysis.
