Fouad Amraoui

Fouad Amraoui is a Professor of Hydrogeology at the Department of Geology, Faculty of Sciences, Hassan II University in Casablanca, Morocco, a position he has held since 1990. He concurrently serves as President of the ARADD Association (since 2009) and Head of the Hydrosciences Research Team within the GAIA Research Laboratory (since 2015).

His academic credentials include a doctoral thesis of the 3rd cycle defended at Montpellier, France in 1988, followed by a doctoral thesis at Casablanca in 2005.

Professor Amraoui's research spans critical hydrogeological and environmental domains with emphasis on groundwater resources in coastal, mountain, and karst environments, climate change adaptation strategies, and urban agriculture integration in sustainable city planning. His work leverages remote sensing and GIS for resource assessment, addressing challenges like saltwater intrusion in coastal aquifers and groundwater management in crystalline terrains. Notable projects include the Moroccan-German Research-Action Project on Urban Agriculture in Casablanca (2008-2014), funded by Germany's BMBF.

His publication record reveals consistent focus on Moroccan hydrogeological systems, with recent work (2017-2020) emphasizing advanced groundwater assessment techniques in the Middle Atlas and Anti-Atlas regions, alongside innovative applications of urban agriculture for sustainable development.

Scientific recognition includes:

• Hassan II Prize for the Environment 2018 for developing an educational urban agriculture garden at the Mediouna wastewater treatment plant

Professor Amraoui has secured significant research funding including the BMBF-funded Moroccan-German project (2008-2014) and directed the GAIA Research Laboratory from 2010-2015. His mentoring extends to hydrogeological field studies conducted for state bodies and design offices between 1986-2020.

He leads the Hydrosciences Research Team at GAIA Laboratory and maintains active roles in the Moroccan Committee of the International Association of Hydrogeologists (founding member since 1994) and the Casablanca-Settat Regional Office of the Moroccan Alliance for Climate and Sustainable Development (since 2016).
