William P. Anderson Jr. is a Professor of Hydrogeology and Interim Chair of the Department of Geography and Planning at Appalachian State University. He has been a faculty member since 2004, combining expertise in hydrogeology and civil engineering to study groundwater flow, solute transport, and urban hydrology in diverse environments including coastal barrier islands and mountain streams.
- B.C.E. in Civil Engineering (1989) - University of Dayton
- B.S. in Geology (1990) - University of Dayton
- M.S. in Geological Sciences (1992) - University of Maine
- Ph.D. in Earth Sciences (1999) - North Carolina State University
Anderson’s research focuses on quantifying groundwater-surface water interactions, particularly examining saltwater intrusion from sea-level rise and storm events, urban hydrology impacts, and interdisciplinary approaches to stormwater management. His work integrates field data with numerical modeling to address hydrogeological challenges.
Recent publications highlight his expertise in sea-level rise impacts, urban stormwater management, and coastal aquifer studies. Keywords span hydrogeology, environmental science, and interdisciplinary economics.
- Coastal Groundwater Dynamics
- Urban Hydrology and Salt Contamination
- Climate Change Adaptation
- Groundwater Modeling Techniques
- Interdisciplinary Environmental Economics
- Sea-Level Rise Projections
Anderson received the Appalachian State University College Excellence in Teaching Award (2018) and served as Chair of Geological and Environmental Sciences (2012-2021). He actively involves undergraduates in research, with many presenting at conferences and publishing in journals like Journal of Hydrology and Hydrogeology Journal. Students have secured research grants from Sigma Xi, ASU Honors College, and the Geological Society of America. Collaborations span departments of economics, interdisciplinary studies, and international institutions.
