Dr. Barret Kurylyk is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Resource Engineering at Dalhousie University and holds the Canada Research Chair (Tier II) in Coastal Water Resources. His research focuses on physical hydrology, hydrogeology, and environmental heat transfer in coastal and submarine systems. He actively addresses climate change impacts on water resources, combining fieldwork and modeling.
Education & Experience:
- PhD in Civil Engineering, University of New Brunswick (2009–2014)
- Killam/NSERC Postdoctoral Fellow, University of Calgary (2014–2016)
- Research Associate, McMaster University (2016–2017)
Research Interests: Coastal hydrogeology, saltwater intrusion, groundwater-surface water interactions, and the application of thermal processes in hydrological systems. His work emphasizes field monitoring, numerical modeling, and climate adaptation strategies for vulnerable coastal communities.
Publications: Over 50 peer-reviewed articles since 2022, with recent focus on Arctic freshwater vulnerability, tidal aquifer dynamics, and groundwater thermal management. Key themes include coastal resilience and innovative solutions for water security.
Awards: Canada Research Chair (2024–present).
Advising & Grants: Supervises 10+ graduate students and postdocs. Active in securing research funding for interdisciplinary projects through partnerships with government and NGOs.
Labs/Teams: Leads the Dalhousie Groundwater Lab, advancing coastal hydrogeological research and community engagement.
