Dr. Floris Barthel serves as Assistant Professor in the Bioinnovation and Genome Sciences Division at the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen), with adjunct appointments at City of Hope (Comprehensive Cancer Center program member), University of Arizona, and Arizona State University. His laboratory focuses on genomic approaches to study glioma development and evolution.
His research centers on fundamental mechanisms of glioma pathogenesis, particularly telomere dysfunction and aneuploidy. The Barthel Laboratory employs long-read sequencing and spatial transcriptomics to investigate tumor evolution, with special interest in liquid biopsies for longitudinal therapy response monitoring. Key research areas include radiation resistance mechanisms (notably PDPN-related pathways), epigenetic evolution in IDH-mutant gliomas, and spatial heterogeneity in DNA methylation classification.
Analysis of recent publications reveals consistent focus on tumor evolution dynamics across spatial and temporal dimensions. His work integrates genomic, epigenetic, and microenvironmental factors to understand treatment resistance mechanisms, with strong emphasis on translational applications for glioma therapy. Major contributions include defining molecular subtypes in diffuse gliomas and identifying radiation-associated deletion signatures.
Dr. Barthel's research program receives both public and private philanthropic funding for translational and basic science projects. He actively participates in academic training, having taught at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory's Brain Tumor course and mentoring laboratory members through various institutional programs. His laboratory maintains active collaborations across multiple institutions including City of Hope and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory.
The Barthel Laboratory, based in Arizona's Sonoran Desert region, utilizes state-of-the-art genomic technologies to address fundamental questions in glioma biology. Recent team activities include participation in professional meetings (CSHL Telomere meeting) and collaborative research events, demonstrating an active research environment focused on brain tumor genomics.
