Floris Barthel is an Assistant Professor in the Neuroscience (PhD) program at Arizona State University (ASU), leading the Barthel Lab at the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) in Phoenix. His research focuses on cancer genomics, particularly glioma evolution, utilizing cutting-edge technologies like long-read sequencing (PacBio Revio, Oxford Nanopore Promethion) and spatial transcriptomics (10X Xenium, Vizgen MERSCOPE). The lab investigates telomere dysfunction, genome instability, and tumor microenvironment interactions to understand glioma development and therapy resistance.
- Key areas: glioma evolution, telomere biology, structural variation analysis, spatial transcriptomics.
- Technologies employed: long-read sequencing, spatial genomics, computational genomics.
Research projects include mapping telomere dysfunction impacts on glioma genomes, reconstructing evolutionary trajectories, and developing assays like Telomere-C to study chromatin interactions. The lab actively recruits students and postdocs for projects in computational biology and experimental genomics.
Notable collaborations include work with Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and institutions globally. The lab’s future directions aim to identify therapeutic vulnerabilities and improve patient outcomes through precision medicine approaches.
