Dr Firat Cengiz is a Senior Lecturer in Law at Liverpool Law School, University of Liverpool. He previously held roles as Assistant Professor at Tilburg University (Netherlands) and a Max Weber Fellow at the European University Institute (Florence, Italy). His PhD and Master's degrees in Law were awarded by the University of East Anglia, funded by the UK Government's Overseas Research Award Scheme. He also led a prestigious EU Marie Curie grant (2015-2018) investigating citizenship and participation in EU competition policy.
His research focuses on the intersection of law, political science, and economics, with primary interests in EU competition law, gender equality, deliberative democracy, and EU external relations—particularly addressing Kurdish human rights perspectives. He leads the 'Feminist Legal Research and Action Network' and contributes to the 'EU Law at Liverpool' research group.
He teaches modules on EU Law, Competition Law, Law and Gender, and Blockchain Regulation. His recent publications explore cryptocurrency regulation, deliberative democracy in the EU, and gender-responsive budgeting. Notable awards include the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship and Max Weber Fellowship.
As PGR Director of the School of Law and Social Justice, he oversees postgraduate research training. His work emphasizes interdisciplinary methods, with grants and publications addressing both legal frameworks and socio-political dynamics in European integration.
