Fiona Powrie is a Professor of Musculoskeletal Sciences and Director of the Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology at the University of Oxford. She leads the Mucosal Immunology research group, focusing on the interplay between intestinal microbiota and immune systems in inflammatory conditions like IBD. Her work has identified key roles of regulatory T cells and innate lymphoid cells in immune regulation and inflammation.
- Education: BSc (Biochemistry) from the University of Bath (1985), D.Phil (Immunology) from the University of Oxford (1990).
- Affiliations: Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology, Nuffield Department of Medicine, and Wellcome Trust-funded programs.
Her research interests include regulatory T cells, IL-23 signaling, and microbiota-driven immune dysregulation. Key findings include the IL-23 pathway's role in chronic intestinal inflammation and mechanisms of immune homeostasis in the gut.
- Awards: DBE (2021), Louis-Jeantet Prize (2012), Fellow of the Royal Society (2011), and numerous lectureships/honors.
She directs the Wellcome Trust PhD Program in Infection, Immunology, and Translational Medicine (2008–2019) and chairs the MRC Microbiome Cluster. Her translational work aims to bridge model systems and clinical IBD therapies.
