Hussein Al-Mossawi

Dr Hussein Al-Mossawi is an NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer in Rheumatology at the Nuffield Department of Orthopaedics, Rheumatology and Musculoskeletal Sciences (NDORMS), University of Oxford, and concurrently a Fellow by Special Election in Medical Sciences and lecturer in pathology & immunology at St Edmund Hall, University of Oxford. He also lectures at Exeter College.

Research Focus

Dr Al-Mossawi’s research centres on dissecting immune responses in autoimmune inflammatory diseases, with a particular emphasis on psoriatic arthritis and spondyloarthritis. Using cutting-edge single-cell multi-omics, flow cytometry and patient-derived clinical trials, his group investigates:

• GM-CSF biology and its role in axial & peripheral spondyloarthritis
• IL-7R polymorphisms and inflammatory signalling
• Immunological mechanisms underpinning psoriatic arthritis
• Biomarker discovery for stratified therapy

Research Leadership & Funding

Dr Al-Mossawi currently leads translational projects funded by the NIHR and Wellcome Trust, including the phase 2 NAMASTE trial targeting GM-CSF in axial spondyloarthritis and the Oxford Psoriatic Arthritis Centre (Ox-PACE) programme. He mentors early-career clinician-scientists and contributes to undergraduate teaching in pathology and immunology across multiple Oxford colleges.

Laboratory & Teams

He works within the Oxford Psoriatic Arthritis Centre (Ox-PACE) and collaborates closely with the Powrie and Bowness groups at the Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology and the Translational Gastroenterology Unit, fostering interdisciplinary projects that span rheumatology, hepatology and mucosal immunology.
