Professor Fiona Poland is a Professor of Social Research Methodology at the School of Health Sciences, University of East Anglia. She holds roles including Research Lead for the School of Rehabilitation Sciences, member of the School Executive Committee, and Capacity Development lead at the Institute of Health Research. Her work focuses on community-based support for older adults, particularly those with dementia and their carers. She has held leadership positions in the Association for Research in the Voluntary and Community Sector (ARVAC) and contributes to national groups within the NIHR Dementias Network.
Education: BA (Hons) Social Anthropology (University of Manchester, 1978), MA Applied Social Research (University of Manchester, 1983), PhD Sociology (University of Manchester, 1992).
Research interests include qualitative methods such as ethnography, social network analysis, and participatory research. She explores structures and resources promoting independence in community settings, including volunteer befriending for dementia caregivers and community-based rehabilitation. Her recent projects include Social Prescribing for Dementia Support and developing pharmacogenetic test pathways in NHS pharmacies.
She has secured £16M in grants, 80 peer-reviewed publications, and serves as journal editor for Quality in Ageing and Older Adults. Awards include the UEA Engagement Award (2013).
Teaching includes modules on qualitative research methods for MSc Health Science programs and supervision of 14 PhD students. Current supervision topics span interdisciplinary collaboration in healthcare and methodological innovation in cardiovascular research.
