Ann Anka is an Associate Professor in the School of Social Work at the University of East Anglia (UEA) and a member of the Centre for Research on Children and Families. She joined UEA in 2012 as a Lecturer in Social Work, following 8 years at Havering College where she taught on BA Social Work and Practice Education programs. Her work focuses on adult social work, older people, and carers, with research interests including decolonization in education, safeguarding adults, self-neglect, and service user involvement. She has led projects such as 'Decolonising Social Work Practice Education' supported by the International Association of Schools of Social Work.
Her teaching spans courses in Social Work and Law, Working with Diversity, and Social Work with Older People. Key collaborations include international participatory action research in social work curricula and safeguarding adult partnerships. Anka has published extensively on professional curiosity in safeguarding, carer abuse, and qualitative research methods. She actively contributes to policy discussions through roles like Guest Editor for the Journal of Adult Protection and invited talks at safeguarding conferences.
Anka’s research employs qualitative and participatory methods, emphasizing lived experiences. Recent projects include co-authoring a scoping review on decolonizing field education and a literature review on carers experiencing abuse. Her work bridges academic research with practical social work interventions, advocating for marginalized groups and systemic change.
