Fiona J. Hughes-McDonnell is an Associate Professor in the Department of Teacher Education at the University of Southern Maine (USM), where she also serves as Director of Educator Preparation and Accreditation. She holds a Ed.D. from Harvard Graduate School of Education, an M.A. in Education from Tufts University, and a B.A. in Zoology from the University of New Hampshire. Her expertise spans progressive education methodologies, teacher development, STEM educator preparation, and curriculum design.
Dr. McDonnell's research focuses on inquiry-based learning, collaborative processes in education, and school redesign. She has extensive leadership experience in public education including roles as a senior academic leader at a community college and associate principal for curriculum and instruction. Her work integrates critical pedagogy principles from thinkers like Piaget, Dewey, and Duckworth.
Professional service includes membership on the NH Council for Teacher Education, Massachusetts Alliance for Socio-Emotional Learning, and Boston Area Girls STEM Collaborative. Her teaching specialization lies at the intersection of science education and democratic educational practices.
