Fintan Costello is an Associate Professor in the School of Computer Science at University College Dublin. He holds a BSc from University College Cork and a PhD in Computer Science from Trinity College Dublin. His academic career includes roles as a Lecturer at Dublin City University and a Forbairt E.U. Presidency Post-Doctoral Fellow at Trinity College Dublin.
His research interests span cognitive science, computational linguistics, mathematics, and artificial intelligence. He focuses on biases in human reasoning, rational inference processes, computational models of probabilistic and decision-making systems, and bioinformatics. Key areas include the origins of mental biases, probabilistic reasoning models, and the interplay between statistical methodologies and human judgment.
Costello has been awarded the UCD Teaching & Learning Award (2004) and the UCD President's Research Award (2003). He coordinates modules in functional programming (Scheme/Lisp), cognitive psychology, and cognitive modeling. His grants include the Science Foundation Ireland-funded ML-Labs project (2019–2027), aimed at advancing machine learning expertise in Ireland.
His professional activities include committee memberships in the Humanities Research Ethics Committee and the Faculty of Science Stage 1 committee. He has contributed to interdisciplinary projects such as T-Align, a bioinformatics tool for comparing microbial community profiles.
