Associate Professor Tony Veale is affiliated with the School of Computer Science at University College Dublin (UCD). He holds a B.Sc. (1988) and M.Sc. (1990) from University College Cork and a Ph.D. (1996) from Trinity College Dublin. His career spans academia and industry roles at Hitachi Dublin Laboratory, Cycorp, Coreintellect, and Intelliseek, where he contributed to projects like the CYC knowledge base and patented question-answering systems. Veale authored Exploding The Creativity Myth (2012) and co-founded the Association for Computational Creativity (ACC), hosting its 2012 conference.
His research focuses on computational creativity, analogical reasoning, metaphor, and irony, with applications in robotics, storytelling, and natural language processing. Key achievements include developing frameworks for embodied storytelling and irony detection in social media. He has received the Best Paper Award at the 2017 International Conference on Computational Creativity (ICCC) and has contributed to initiatives like UCD’s Software Engineering program in Shanghai.
Teaching interests include generative AI, computational creativity, and knowledge-based techniques. Veale’s work bridges cognitive science and AI, emphasizing creative language use through autonomous systems like Twitterbots. His research spans interdisciplinary collaborations, including work at KAIST (2011–2014) under the Korean WCU program.
