Recep Kaan Dereli

Dr. Recep Kaan Dereli is an Assistant Professor in the School of Chemical and Bioprocess Engineering at University College Dublin (UCD). He holds a joint PhD in Environmental/Sanitary Engineering from Delft University of Technology (Netherlands) and Istanbul Technical University (Turkey). His research focuses on wastewater treatment, anaerobic digestion, mathematical modeling of biochemical processes, and sustainable resource recovery. He has extensive experience in industrial wastewater treatment, leachate management, and energy optimization in water systems.

Before joining UCD in 2019, Dr. Dereli served as a Research Assistant at Istanbul Technical University (2005–2019) and a Post-Doctoral Researcher at UCD (2017–2019). He specializes in membrane bioreactors (MBRs), anaerobic digestion systems, and data-driven models for process optimization. His work integrates environmental engineering principles with energy efficiency, emphasizing circular economy approaches.

In teaching, he coordinates core modules such as Bioprocess Engineering Principles and Chemical & Bioprocess Engineering Measurement, and contributes to Environmental Engineering courses. He actively supervises PhD students in wastewater treatment innovation and energy systems integration.

Dr. Dereli’s research output spans over 60 publications, focusing on topics like anaerobic digestion optimization, nutrient recovery, and demand response strategies in wastewater infrastructure. His work bridges laboratory-scale innovation with large-scale industrial applications, addressing global challenges in sustainable water and energy systems.
