Ulf Theilen

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ulf Theilen serves as Professor of Urban Water Management and Head of the Department of Urban Water Management and Anaerobic Process Engineering at the Technical University of Central Hesse (THM), a position held since 2001. He additionally acts as Spokesperson for the Competence Center for Energy and Environmental Systems Technology (ZEuUS).

Education:

• Civil Engineering studies at the University of Hanover (1979-1987)
• Doctorate in 1994 on "Operating results and costs of large-scale leachate treatment plants"

Research Interests: Prof. Theilen specializes in integrated urban water systems with emphasis on sustainable treatment technologies. His work bridges engineering practice and environmental protection through:

• Advanced wastewater treatment (municipal/industrial)
• Sewage sludge valorization and phosphorus recovery
• Landfill leachate management systems
• Anaerobic bioprocess optimization
• Membrane bioreactor applications
• Energy auditing and consumption optimization

Advising and Professional Leadership: He supervises graduate theses across urban water management domains while holding influential positions in the German Water Association (DWA), including Deputy Chairman of Technical Committee KA 7 on Membrane Bioreactor Processes and active roles in membrane technology and energy analysis working groups.

Laboratory and Institutional Framework: Prof. Theilen leads the Department of Urban Water Management and Anaerobic Process Engineering while directing THM's Competence Center ZEuUS, which coordinates interdisciplinary research in energy and environmental systems technology.
