Prof Filippo Osella serves as Professor of Anthropology and South Asian Studies in the School of Global Studies at the University of Sussex and participates in the Sussex Asia Centre Steering Committee. His academic work bridges anthropological theory with regional expertise across South Asia, West Asia, and East Asia.
Osella investigates Islamic reformism's interplay with economic practice, examining novel piety-entrepreneurship dynamics in Kerala and the Gulf. His research extends to Islamic charity systems in India and Sri Lanka, Indian migrant experiences in West Asia, and transnational trust-building among Indian export agents in China. Current projects explore how Kerala fishing communities integrate local knowledge with scientific data to address climate vulnerabilities through a Sussex Sustainability Research Programme-funded marine forecast initiative.
His recent edited publications analyze moral economies and philanthropic practices within Indian Ocean contexts, revealing consistent thematic focus on religiously-inflected economic behaviors across transnational networks. These works demonstrate methodological rigor in connecting micro-level social practices with macro-level market transformations.
Supported by the Sussex Sustainability Research Programme, his marine forecast project exemplifies applied anthropological engagement, collaborating directly with artisanal fishers to develop accessible climate hazard responses while documenting risk cultures and environmental vulnerabilities.
